The Galesburg Community Foundation Celebrates 20 Years of Generosity
When the Galesburg Community Foundation (GCF) was formed in 2004, it was not a coincidence that its mission focused on the overall health of the local communities.
Formed from the sale of Galesburg Cottage Hospital, GCF was founded on the belief that the money invested in the hospital’s foundation should remain local forever.
In July, GCF celebrated 20 years of fulfilling its mission to develop and encourage the philanthropic efforts of people and organizations for a healthy region.
Today, GCF stands as the region’s leading force in philanthropic giving. As a regional solution-focused grant maker, GCF acts as a permanent, comprehensive, and reliable source for giving and innovative social impact.
Turning Out for the Community
Each year, GCF supports regional nonprofits through an annual grant cycle, known as The Turnout. In July, they announced a record-breaking $514,000 in awards.
“The Turnout aims to empower local nonprofits to share their stories and articulate their needs while allowing donors to support and strengthen local organizations” said Joshua Gibb, President and CEO of GCF. “We are proud to say that this year, 41 nonprofit organizations who submitted proposals were fully funded.”
The Turnout is just one of the many ways in which GCF addresses diverse needs throughout the region. GCF awards scholarships to high school graduates, provides grants to local teachers through local community funds, and is currently tackling food insecurity.
Utilizing a mission impact investment strategy, GCF made a real estate investment that enabled the construction of the new River Bend Food Bank. River Bend directly serves more than 50 food pantries in the region, making a significant difference for those experiencing hunger.
The Future and a Sense of Possibility
According to Joshua Gibb, 20 years is just the beginning. “By thinking differently, we have the opportunity to change people’s lives. I hope our community will be moved by a sense of possibility,” said Gibb.
With a community deeply committed to philanthropic generosity, Galesburg Community Foundation will continue its critical and innovative work in the region. GCF remains poised to drive positive impact through creative and sustainable solutions in an ever-evolving world.
Summarized SouthCol’s James Lumberg, “I have witnessed firsthand Galesburg Community Foundation’s commitment to its community over the course of our 10-year relationship. Their work is truly changing lives.”
